
Dr. Marcey Sorensen became Superintendent of La Joya ISD in February 2024, following her role as Deputy Superintendent for the Virginia Department of Education. At VDOE, she led initiatives focusing on learning acceleration, early literacy, and special education for 1.3 million students across 131 districts, including launching a high-intensity tutoring program to address pandemic-related learning gaps.
Previously, as Assistant Superintendent and later Chief Academic Officer at Fort Worth ISD, she drove significant improvements with an 80% increase in B-rated campuses and nearly 90% reduction in F-rated schools. Her accomplishments included reorganizing special education services, implementing evidence-based curriculum in multiple subjects, and establishing a principal pipeline with Texas Christian University.
From 2017-2019, Dr. Sorensen served the Madison Metropolitan School District as Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction and later as Deputy Chief of Secondary Schools. She began her educational career in 1995 with Chicago Public Schools, spending a decade as a social studies teacher before serving as principal for nearly 11 years.
Dr. Sorensen earned her doctorate in Educational Policy & Leadership from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2015, following a Master’s in Pre-K-12 Administration from Northeastern Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University.
She lives in the Rio Grande Valley with her husband, also a career educator, and their two children.
